After World War I, the German economy was in bad shape. The Great Depression around the world meant record high unemployment. Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler rose to power by blaming the Jews for the bad economy, using them as scapegoats for causing the Depression. The German government issued pogroms, or attacks on Jewish people and businesses. Later, concentration camps like Auschwitz opened, and Jews were forced out of their homes and sent to the camps, where they were deprived of food and forced to work until they died. Nearly six million Jews and five million non-Jews died during the Holocaust. Explore this section to find out more.
